Types of Tequila (what do they mean)?
Types of tequila (what's the difference?) Typically, tequila is bottled in one of five categories: 1.) Blanco (translates as "white") or plata (translates as "silver") – this is baby tequila. It is called white because it is clear (like water or Vodka). It is not aged, rather it is bottled or stored straight from the distillation process 2.) Oro (translates as "gold") – un-aged (translates as "blanco") - this is basically an attempt at making un-aged tequila seem better than it is. This is usually done by adding some sort of caramel coloring, sugar-based syrup, glycerin, and/or oak extract. Most people are familiar with "Cuervo Gold". 3.) Reposado (translates as "rested") – this is 'mildly aged tequila'-- it is aged for a minimum of 2 months, but never more than 1 year (in oak barrels) 4.) Añejo (translates as "aged" or "vintage") – this category of Tequila is aged at least 1 year, but no more than 3 years (also in oak barrels) 5.) Maduro (translates as "extra añejo", "extra aged" or "ultra aged") – this best of the best category of Tequila has been aged for at least 3 years (also in oak barrels). This category has not always been around, but with the rise of Tequila as a fine spirit, Maduro tequila came onto the scene in March 2006. |
